Why I've never recommended protein shakes to my clients

Is one of your favorite go-to breakfasts protein shakes?

Members in my Facebook group Nutrition Superstars were commenting on how they enjoy protein shakes for breakfast or a quick meal (you’re welcome to join my group! It’s free! Just click here).

It inspired me to share why I’ve NEVER recommended a protein shake to any of my weight loss clients to this day. My response tends to surprise people but it’s very important.

Now remember, if you’re not a client of mine, I don’t know you or your unique health situation. So, this info may or may not pertain to you so please use discernment (or sign-up for a free consult if you’re interested in becoming a client).

Why I've never recommended protein shakes to my clients

1. For the clients I serve, a lack of protein was never their issue (so I didn’t focus on it).

My clients come to me because they have 50-75+ pounds to lose and may be struggling with a chronic disease or want to get off medication. A lack of protein was never any of my client’s issue so I didn’t focus on it.

Some clients worried about not getting enough protein but as long as you eat enough calories (which generally isn’t an issue in the United States) and are eating enough diverse foods, you’re going to get enough protein.

2. Know the answers to these questions before drinking protein shakes...

How much protein do you need? And, how much are you actually getting?

The Institute of Medicine states that we only need to consume 10% of calories from protein to ensure get a safe amount. According to the Center for Diseases Control, from 2013-2016 every sex and age group in America is getting at least 15% of calories from protein. Americans are already eating more than enough protein (2).

Americans are already eating more than enough protein.

3. The source of protein in your shake could be helpful, worthless or harmful.

If you use protein powders (I don’t) then it should come from whole plant foods. But be careful because a lot of those protein supplements are made for people who workout vigorously and aren’t concerned about weight loss. That’s not my clients! So, depending on the nutrient profile of even whole food plant-based protein powders, they may not help promote weight loss.

I would never recommend a client use animal-based protein drinks as animal protein is associated with many chronic diseases. And there can be an excessive amount of caffeine harmful chemicals supplements in them.

Not all protein supplements are created equally ;)

In my next video I’ll share why I don’t recommend smoothies as my NUMBER energy boost for breakfast. Now I’d love to hear from you… comment below with your answer today’s Take Control Now question…

Take Control Now

Why do you think you should have protein in your smoothies? Or, what new information did you learn from this video?

Two ways your weight may be holding you back in business

Have you ever held yourself back in work or life from being over weight?

Have you ever....

  • worn baggy clothes to hide feeling fat?
  • avoided getting photographed or had others stand in front of you to hide yourself?
  • been grouchy with employees because you don't have energy throughout the day?

Not feeling 100% confident in who we are and how we look is hard.  And it can take a real toll on our health.

The reason I ask is this...

I've shifted my focus to helping female entrepreneurs and business leaders achieve healthy weight-loss now and keep it off long-term.

How?

By coaching them very intensively on how to eat optimally (aka getting healthier than they realize possible to better kick ass in their business and life).

One reason I'm so excited about this is because I want to see and help women progress in business (and live longer) and not hold themselves back because of their weight and health.

It pains me that weight discrimination is a real thing and that many women won't reach their full potential because they think they have to look a certain way before they can get, have or say "X."

Others won't let their weight stop them, but fighting through those mental blocks can become very emotionally exhausting.

The reason I'm telling you this is because...

Even if you're not female or an entrepreneur, there's a good chance you'll resonate with what I continue to write about and get useful info on how to improve your diet and your health.

As my years continue growing this business, how and who I reach will continue to evolve and now is one of those times. I'm so glad you're here for the ride!

How does having extra weight hold you back in your business or life (if at all)?

It's never easy to talk about but the more we do, the easier it becomes to love, accept and take care of ourselves to kick better ass in life and business.

15 Healthy Halloween Treats for Trick-or-Treaters

Halloween is creeping upon us... mwahahahaha.  Which means, midget robots, witches, ninjas and clowns will be knocking at your door for a trick or a treat.

If you aren’t graced by cuties in costumes for trick or treat night, maybe your students, your children or grandchildren will be engaging in ‘treating’ at school (or your staff at work for that matter).

If this is the case, I want you to have the opportunity to be prepared with healthy alternative Halloween treats to help you and your kids not eat endless amounts of junk this Halloween.

Why is this even important?  Shouldn’t kids be able to eat candy for Halloween?

Yes, kids should be able to have treats for special occasions.  The problem is your child may eat pounds of candy for Halloween, then Thanksgiving comes, then Christmas, New Years and then Valentine’s Day is right around the corner.  Not to mention all the birthdays in between AND the daily servings of refined foods, meat and dairy you and your child are most likely eating and all of this adds up!

Ridding yourself and your kid's dietary pattern of these foods are a must if you want them to be lean and healthy adults.  It's never too late to start.

And psst… you don't have to not let your kid trick-or-treat or have any Halloween candy, but set boundaries to how much they can eat (a few pieces on Halloween night) and explain to them why you can't eat 5 pounds of candy in one month.

Likewise, kids are more likely to remember the experience of trick-or-treating at your house than the actually candy you give them.  Light the driveway with candles or scare them from the bushes… that will make the below 'treats' more enjoyable for kids.

So, here they are….

15 Halloween Treats for Trick-or-Treaters

  1. Mini boxes of raisins (I've done this in the past and parents have appreciated it)
  2. Cups of unsweetened applesauce
  3. Baggies of dried fruit
  4. Trailmix
  5. Peanuts in their shells
  6. Small packs of pistachios
  7. Granola bars
  8. Lar bars (like a granola bar, but made only of dried fruit and nuts and pricey)
  9. Clementines (draw spooky faces on their skin with a permeant marker.  They look like mini pumpkins!)
  10. Bananas (glue on googly eyes to make it a funny face)
  11. Packets of popcorn without oil or butter they can pop at home
  12. Fruit leathers (I use to get these for Easter as a little girl and loved them)
  13. Pencils with a Halloween theme
  14. Erasers that look like bats or ghosts
  15. Stickers (what kid wouldn't love these!)

Or, you can always just trick them!
